Can you feel it? That tiny bit of turmoil creeping in as the room as it fills with guests for the holidays? According to a Healthline survey, 62% of us feel “very or somewhat” elevated stress levels during the holiday season. Only 10% of us report no stress. (Those 10% were sipping a pina colada beach side, as they chose to avoid the holidays altogether. At least, that's what we think.)
When did The Most Wonderful Time of the Year become so stressful? And how can we relieve some of the pressure that surrounds the holidays?
Pressure is something our super rush couriers are used to. Last minute hot shot deliveries are our specialty. Deliveries in the middle of the night, or on a Friday during rush hour, or smack dab in the middle of a holiday weekend are stress inducing for our customers…but not for our experienced couriers. We thrive in it!
And we think we can help you thrive this holiday season, even as the pressure rises. When you feel stress start to boil over, whether you’re in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner, or surrounded by gifs that need wrapping, if you have just a few minutes, you have time to perform one of these six super rush ways to beat the holiday stress.
Box breathing- Sit up straight and take a deep breath, filling your lungs while you count to 4 slowly. Hold your breath for 4 counts. Exhale fully for 4 counts. Then hold your breath again for 4 counts. Evidence shows breathing this way has a calming and regulating effect on the body.
Smooch- Pull out some mistletoe and get to smooching! ( Another willing party, of course.) Kissing ignites the pleasure centers in the brain, lowering the stress hormone cortisol. If you’re not quite comfortable with a kiss, being physically close to someone you care for can have similar effects.
Take a hike- Literally. You’ll get double the benefits when you take a brisk walk outdoors. The vitamin D improves mood, as does being around nature, and exercise releases the “happy hormone” serotonin, which can relieve stress and make dealing with your crazy extended family just a little more bearable.
Jam out- Find some headphones and play your favorite tunes for a few minutes. Music, even if it’s hard rock, relaxes us. If we sing along, we get double the benefits, as this relieves tension and reduces stress, as well.
Eat a piece of chocolate- I promise our super rush couriers didn’t make this up. It’s scientifically proven that chocolate reduces stress. It activates receptors in the brain that release pleasure generating neurotransmitters like dopamine.
Tell yourself a joke- But only if it’s funny! Laughter truly is the best medicine. It decreases stress hormones, and increases disease fighting antibody production. So, go ahead, laugh it up, Chuckles.
The holidays can easily get us stressed out. Whether it’s a difficult relationship with a family member or the pressure to make the perfect holiday meal, sometimes we find ourselves more frazzled than festive. But if that panicky feeling starts to well up, remember these fast ways to relax and put them to good use.
