Summertime is a great excuse to indulge in some incredibly delicious treats. Whether it’s a holiday celebration, or just a small gathering of friends, the food tends to be the guest of honor. However, if you’re like some of our Dallas Food Logistics team members, myself included, you’re watching that bikini body, and you’d like to not undo all your hard work you put in for pool season. While I’m a firm believer in the mantra “everything in moderation” there are a few summer foods that fitness professionals agree should never be a part of your summer diet. Get ready to weep a little:
1) Hotdogs, Sausages, and Brats: Ahh- the staples of summer barbeque! Unfortunately, these guys contain 15-25 grams of fat and over 1200 mg of sodium. That’s about all you need for an entire day! Our Dallas Food Logistics friends know this is a toughie, so don’t say “no” all summer, just most days. Instead, enjoy turkey-based sausages.
2) Sugary Alcoholic Drinks: I’m a sucker for a good margarita, but the Dallas Food Delivery pros tell me that this is a big “no no” when it comes to dieting. The sugar equates to calories, which seems a waste when you could be eating your calories. Also, the sodium content in a drink like a margarita is incredibly high compared to other beverages. Instead of indulging in a daiquiri, try a light beer, or a vodka and seltzer with a twist of lime. Save the calories for the good stuff!
3) Fried Desserts: The funnel cake at the carnival, fried Oreos at the state fair, and fry bread at the fiestas are a few that come to mind. It’s not just the “fried” part that make these foods enemies of your diet, it’s that they start out with ingredients like shortening, sugar, and flour…then they get fried in fat. Try fresh fruit drizzled in chocolate, instead.
4) Mayonnaise based Salads: Whether you’re mixing it with potatoes, eggs, or even lobster, mayo is a high-fat condiment. You don’t have to skip the slaw, though. Try subbing low-fat mayo or even plain Greek yogurt in your recipes. This is a Dallas Food Logistics best kept secret. You’ll still get the creamy goodness you’re craving, but you’ll slash the fat, calories, and sugar. Plus, you’ll gain some added protein.
5) Ice cream: The problem isn’t necessarily in the ice cream; it’s in the serving size. When it’s hot outside and you’ve worked up an appetite, it’s easy to finish off an entire pint of ice cream without realizing what you’ve done. Fifty grams of fat later, and you’ve got yourself a real gut-wrenching problem. Try freezing fresh fruit and serving it with yogurt dip, instead.
The summer weather brings an abundance of food. Some if it, like the top five foods the Food Logistics Delivery team mentioned here, is not so spectacular for the waistline, but there are many summer foods that are delicious and nutritious at the same time. Corn on the cob, for example, is loaded with fiber and is easy to pop on the grill right in its own husk. Watermelon is another tasty summer treat that can be eaten chilled, grilled, or right off the rind. Don’t forget the summer veggies that are in season, too. Zucchini is a Dallas Food Logistics favorite, and it’s another versatile fare. Wrap it in foil and place it right on the grill for a smoky taste, or use a vegetable slicer to make thin strings that can substitute for pasta, saving you calories and boosting the nutritional value. Keep these tips in mind and have tasty summer without ruining that beach body you’ve worked for all year.
